Meet Lawnmower, the Senior Bulldog Whose Snores Name Themselves
Adoption Stories·October 2, 2026

Staff at Harnett County Animal Shelter could have gone with something stately when a 10-year-old English Bulldog arrived. Winston or Walter would have fit a dog of his age and build. Then he started making noise, and the decision was made for them.
His name is Lawnmower. According to the shelter's account, shared by iHeartDogs, the senior Bulldog sounds less like a dog and more like a small engine that refuses to start. He is also built like a dinner roll, with a round, soft body and the wrinkled, squashed face the breed is known for.
The grunts, wheezes and rumbles are not unusual for a Bulldog. The breed's short muzzle, a trait called brachycephaly, narrows the airways and often leads to loud breathing, snorting and snoring. Many owners find the sounds endearing. They can also be a reminder that flat-faced dogs need careful care, especially in hot weather, during hard exercise, and as they age.
That last point matters in Lawnmower's case. At 10, he is well past the typical lifespan for many Bulldogs, which tends to run shorter than that of other breeds. Senior dogs of any breed often wait longer in shelters than puppies, even though many are calm, house-trained and happy to settle into a quiet routine. A dog who is content to nap on the couch and provide his own soundtrack may suit plenty of homes.
Prospective adopters considering a Bulldog, or any senior dog, should plan for a few practical things. A vet visit soon after adoption can establish a baseline for breathing, joints, skin and dental health. Skin folds need regular cleaning and drying to prevent irritation. Walks should be short and kept to cooler parts of the day, and a harness is usually kinder than a collar for a dog with a sensitive airway.
The shelter's lighthearted tone is part of the appeal. A funny name and a vivid description can get a senior dog noticed in a way a standard listing sometimes cannot. For Lawnmower, the hope is that the attention leads to a family who will love the noise as much as the staff clearly do.
